Gianlugi Donnarumma, after his rejection of Milan’s contract offer, will most likely leave; but who will replace him?
It is safe to say that Donnarumma will not be the starting goalkeeper in Milan’s 2017/2018 campaign, which, of course, will feature Europan Football (as Milan did qualify for the Europa League qualifying round, after finishing 6th). But this bears the question: Who will be Milan’s goalkeeper next year?
Even though he is now hated by the Rossoneri faithful, there is no denying that Gigio Donnarumma was a crucial part of last year’s campaign. Which is partly why we were so surprised when he rejected the offer. He gained us many points in the Serie A, and finding a goalkeeper of his talent and potential will be a very tough task for Mirabelli and Fassone. But in the last few days, Milan have been sniffing around for a new shot stopper.
The most likely name, at the moment, seems to be Genoa’s Mattia Perin. Gianluca Di Marzio, a reliable source, stated that Genoa’s asking price is €15 Million (€10Million + €5million in Bonuses). But he also says that Milan’s offer is €7 million + €8 Million in bonuses. A agreement is close. The problem with him, is that he is very injury prone. He only appeared in 16 Serie A games this season, due to a terrible injury earlier on in the Season.
Another hot name is Juventus’ Norberto Neto. The Brazilian keeper plays second fiddle to the Old Lady’s legendary number 1, Gigi Buffon, Donnarumma’s main idol. He made 8 appearances in the league this year, with 5 clean sheets. An average of 0.3 goals conceded per game, an exceptional statistic.
Bernd Leno, of Bayer Leverkusen, is a name which most fans would be delighted to see in a Milan jersey. The 25 year old German has been playing at a high level with Bayer 04 for many years, playing every single Bundesliga game this year (34). Another German linked to the club is PSG’s Kevin Trapp, but he seems unlikely to arrive.
One of the first names mentioned after the Donnarumma story was Napoli goalkeeper, Pepe Reina. He is a less popular option within the fan base, due to his age. But he would definitely bring a lot of experience to Milan’s young team. He played 37 games in the league, coneding an average of 1.0 goals per game, the joint 2nd best in Serie A.
If Milan were to fail to sign someone, Alessandro Plizzari, a young promising Goalkeeper, who is already a Milan player would be am interesting option. Earlier, Galliani was heard saying that Plizzari is every bit as good as Donnarumma. So if that is anything to go by, we have a great, young keeper on our hands. Many reports claim that a meetig between Plizzari’s agent and the Milan management has taken place, to discuss a contract renewal. Plizzari is one year younger than Donnarumma, and has impressed when given a chance. He played a few friendly matches for the Milan Senior squad, and has been ever present in the primavera side (Milan’s youth team). Plizarri also impressed at the U20 world cup, saving two penalties, to clinch 3rd place for the “Azzurrini”.
Who do you think will be the replacement? Who would you like to see between the sticks next season?
