Certainly it was not an easy first part of the season for Milan in the defensive side, after the injury of the medial twin of Mattia Caldara (promising prospect for the defense) who will make a comeback in late February and early March, were added during the last month the injuries of Romagnoli and Musacchio, although Mateo already began to train with the team this week and could be the starter for the Bologna match next Tuesday.
Despite these injuries, Rino Gattuso knew how to organize the team well, reinventing Ignazio Abate in a new role as central defender along with Cristian Zapata, where the results have seen one of the fastest and most reactive pairs in the Serie demonstrating solidity, organization and synchrony, adding that thanks to them came the second clean sheet of the season.
Notwithstanding the rumors of a possible arrival of players like Cahill, Christensen or Godin for the winter transfermarket, the club’s leadership and Gattuso agreed that it will not be necessary given the good performances that Zapata and Abate have offered in those roles and the imminent return of Romagnoli (end of December), Musacchio (is already training) and Caldara (end of February), therefore this zone will not be a priority.
Personally I feel that if these two players continue to respond in this way they deserve the contract renewal, which despite not having been protagonists in the team during the last few years, they have shown being serious professionals, with spirit of sacrifice and ready for when they are called to meet on the ground, and they have done it excellently.
In conclusion, Milan does not need a central defender, at least for the winter transfermarket, then for the summer market the field will evaluate if any of the current defenders has not fulfilled the expectations, then in that moment Leonardo and Gazidis will intercede. At the moment the priorities are concentrated in midfield and attack but in defense with Zapata and Abate playing like this there will be no need.
Keep Going Cristian and Ignazio!!
